earth_mom.jpgI will never forget the birth of our first son, Johnny. It was a sunny day and my wife was in labor for 14 hours straight. Luckily, she gave birth to a healthy, living baby boy that I am able to watch grow up and become part of his life. Madeline, who I could never thank enough, was our private pediatrician who came to our house and safely welcomed Johnny into this crazy world. She of course had on a white, wrinkleless, pure and clean dress that looked like it was created by the natural resources of our earth. When she looked into your eyes you could notice her divine hazel colored eyes, they screamed at you from a distance. Her simple touches were so gentle that she made the birth process less stressful for two first time parents.
I grabbed my wife’s hands to assure her my presents and comfort. Her body looked aching with sweat dripping down the sides of her face.
“Take three quick breathes and one long,” I advised her. I remembered this from the last time I was in a birth scene. It was two years ago, our exact house. I was sitting right next to Kate, nervous as never before. Madeline walked in with two warm cloth towels and a fresh smell of potpourri. She gently tucked one towel behind Kate’s neck and the other around mine. The fresh potpourri smelled like she had just picked it from a clean garden; it was soothing. Madeline swiped her warm hands across my back and slowly leveled down towards both of us. She grabbed my hands and laid them on top of Kate’s sweaty hands where she told me to hold her tight. Then, Madeline made sure I helped Kate stay on a rhythmic breathing pattern: quick, quick, slow.
Kate became anxious. Her eyes widened and her muscles contracted every few minutes, she was becoming weak. I felt hopeless, but Madeline knew just what to do. She massaged Kate’s back and legs to release the tension that she had. A pink blanket along with a baby blue blanket was thrown over Madeline’s shoulders. She swiftly slid on a pair of cotton gloves. My heart started to beat faster. I continued to sit by my wife’s side. I could almost feel the pain that was rushing through Kate’s body; I was nervous.
Kate’s scream did not worry Madeline. For Madeline was ready to welcome a new baby into our wonderful world. She laid the baby blankets in between Kate’s legs. Her smile grew as time passed.
Our heart jumped after we heard the first sound of cry from a baby girl. I wiped the hot sweat from Kate’s forehead. Madeline quickly hugged the baby and warmed her with towels that also cleaned her delicate skin. We could hear her gasp for air; she was breathing in the smells of potpourri. She was tightly presses against Madeline’s chest where she nurtured her, but soon enough Madeline gave her away to Kate.
